A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To the Forum: Pseudolus, a household slave in ancient Rome, seizes the opportunity that opens up when his young master, Hero, falls in love with Philia, a lovely courtesan who has been purchased by a military windbag named Miles. If Pseudolus can win Philia away from Miles, Hero will set Pseudolus free. The main function of this plot, of course, is to serve as an excuse for a dizzying tour of vaudevillean turns and general silliness. And as an excuse for the remarkable Sondheim score, the most famous and apt song of which, perhaps, is "Comedy Tonight."
