Last of the Red Hot Lovers (by Neil Simon). This 1969 gem from America's leading comic playwright garnered several Tony nominations, including Best Play, and went on to become a 1972 film starring Alan Arkin, Sally Kellerman, Paula Prentiss, and Renee Taylor. It joins Lost in Yonkers and Laughter on the 23rd Floor on the list of Simon plays mounted by NST.
Barney Cashman, the "last of the red hot lovers," is the middle-aged owner of a New York seafood restaurant in search of a moment of genuine romance and excitement. Barney's quest brings him to -- of all places! -- his mother's apartment. The play's three acts feature encounters between Barney and three different women. There's hard-boiled housewife Elaine, spacey aspiring actress Bobbi, and depressed and moralistic Jeannette, wife of Barney's best friend. These three individuals challenge the hapless but good-hearted Barney in unique and often hilarious ways. As the play unfolds, Barney learns that genuine romance might be closer to home than he thought.
The cast features Tim Pugliese, Annie Poole, Willa Parker, and Cindy Robbins. Together these talented actors bring a great deal of energy and skill to this charming and always timely play.
A recent grant to New Surry Theatre from the Maine Community Foundation means audiences can see this comic romp at a reasonable price. The Maine Expansion Arts Fund grant was designed to support theatre in Maine's smaller communities during the off-season.
